Record heat for May forecast this weekend in Japan
Many parts of Japan saw the mercury top 30 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Weather officials are warning of unseasonal high temperatures over the weekend.
The Meteorological Agency says temperatures surged nationwide due to a high pressure system over the Japanese archipelago.
Kushima City, Miyazaki Prefecture, recorded a daytime high of 30.8 degrees -- the highest on record for the month of May.
The mercury also surged in northern parts of the country. The daytime highs reached 27.9 degrees in Obihiro City, Hokkaido, and 27.7 degrees in Aomori City.
Seven elementary school students in Mie Prefecture and five high school students in Tokyo were taken to hospital for suspected heatstroke.
Authorities are warning of heat-induced illnesses as temperatures are expected to rise further in the coming few days. Some areas will likely have a daytime high of 35 degrees on Sunday.

Sweltering heat hit Japan on Sunday. The temperature shot up to over 39 degrees Celsius in the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido. That's a national record high for May.
The Meteorological Agency says the temperatures soared due to hot air and strong sunshine.
In the city of Obihiro, Hokkaido, the mercury reached 38.7 degrees Celsius, an all-time high for the prefecture.
Daytime highs are expected to reach 35 degrees across the country.
The mercury already hit 31.9 degrees before noon in central Tokyo.

As of 4:00 p.m., Ibigawa Town in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, marked the highest temperature of 37.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture, northern Japan, at 37 degrees.
Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture and Kyoto City, both in western Japan, marked 36.6 and 36.5 degrees respectively, while central Tokyo marked a high of 33.7 degrees.
These figures are the highest for this year.
