Haiku about New Year (2010)


Haiku poets write haiku and sometimes say to themselves,
“What is haiku written for?
What is the meaning of haiku in life?”

Some of those poets have their blogs in the hope that they will share haiku and exchange ideas or comments with each other on the Internet.

Gabi Greve, a German poet, writes haiku in Okayama, Japan. She has studied about the season words used in haiku, and the cultures of Japan.

Strong earthquake jolts Japan

TOKYO - A moderate earthquake jolted central Japan on Sunday, injuring at least five people, damaging houses and a 400-year-old castle, police and officials said.
The quake caused part of a stone wall to collapse at the more than 400-year-old Kameyama Castle, but nobody was injured, according to local police. Several houses were partially damaged.

The 5.4-magnitude quake hit at 12:19 p.m. local time and was centered in Mie prefecture, about 200 miles southwest of Tokyo, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

About six hours later, a magnitude-4.5 temblor believed to be an aftershock struck the area, Japan's Meteorological Agency reported.

二上山護法祭（美咲町）/ふたがみさんごほうさい
斎戒沐浴した行者（護法実＝ごほうざね）が神がかりとなって、本堂前の境内を縦横無尽に走り回る奇祭である。
神が人の身に乗り移った“ごうさま”が神がかりになって、境内を走り回る奇祭。

護法祭〔ごほうさい〕＝護法善神〔密教系寺院に祀られている〕の祭り。
現在は数カ所のみに伝わる奇祭。
真夜中に、護法実〔ごほうざね　－　護法善神の乗り移り〕が両手を広げて境内を飛び回り、「仏法擁護」「伽藍安全」「天下泰平」「万民快楽」を祈念する。
参拝者は捕まるまいと逃げ回る。捕まったら３年間の間に死ぬと言う。
怖わあああああいです。

At Temple Ryosanji (Ryoosan-Ji), August 14, Midnight

This is a very special festival of our area, only held in two othere temples here.
At midnight, the local shaman, called "Goosama", after a week of fasting, cold water ablutions and asceticism at the Temple Ryoosan-Ji comes down from his retreat above the temple, accompanied by Mountain Ascetic Monks, Yamabushi, and is then imbued with the spirit of the Crow God. He hops around the temple grounds, weaving his arms, for about two hours, vigorously running from here to there, sometimes up and down a slope especially made for this one night, in almost pitchdark, with only two torches in two corners of the temple grounds. People shrieck and run away in great horror when he approaches their part of the area.

If he grabs a visitor during this time, that person is said to die within three years. (If you have a special purification ritual performed afterwards, the bad fortune will be taken away though . ... )

During my 12 years in the area, there are quite some stories of people not doing the proper purification rituals (because this is some kind of middle-ages hocuspocus to them ..) and later died from traffic accidents or otherwise ..
