EUROPE
British university researchers say lockdowns and other anti-coronavirus measures imposed by 11 European countries have averted hundreds of thousands of fatalities from COVID-19.
The researchers at Imperial College London used a mathematical model to assess the impact of anti-virus measures. These include local and national lockdowns, bans on mass gatherings, and the closure of schools.
They estimate that without such measures, up to 43 million people might have been infected in the countries and 120,000 of them could have died by the end of March.
In Europe, more than 20,000 people have died from the disease.
- Some European countries have rejected Chinese-made medical supplies designed to combat the coronavirus outbreak after they were found to be below standard or defective.
