- - - Here are 10 simple precautions that can protect you from contracting the coronavirus.
nCoV2019—the Wuhan pneumonia
1. When you leave your home, wear gloves—winter mittens or outdoor gloves—and keep them on in subways, buses, and public spaces.
2. If you are in a social situation
where you should remove your gloves, perhaps to shake hands or dine, do not touch your face or eyes, no matter how much something itches. Keep your hands away from contact with your face. And before you put your gloves back on, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, scrubbing the fingers. Put your gloves on.
3. Change gloves daily, washing them thoroughly, and avoid wearing damp gloves.
4. Masks are useless when worn outdoors and may not be very helpful even indoors. ...
5. Inside your household, remove all of the towels from your bathrooms and kitchen immediately, and replace them with clean towels that have the names of each family member on them. ...
6. Be careful with doorknobs. If it’s possible to open and close doors using your elbows or shoulders, do so. ...
7. If you share meals, do not use your personal chopsticks and utensils to remove food from a serving bowl or plate and, of course, tell your children to never drink out of anybody else’s cups or from a container of shared fluid. It is customary in China to prepare several dishes for a meal and then allow everybody at the table to use their personal chopsticks to pull food from the common dishes: Don’t do this until the epidemic is over. Place serving spoons in each dish and instruct everybody at the table to scoop what they want from the serving dishes onto their personal plates or bowls, return the serving spoon to the main dish, and then use their personal chopsticks only to pick food from their personal plate or bowl into their mouth. Wash all food and kitchenware thoroughly between meals and avoid restaurants that have poor hygiene practices.
8. Absolutely do not buy, slaughter, or consume any live animal or fish until it is known what species was the source of the virus.
9. When the weather allows, open your windows at home or work, letting your space air out. The virus cannot linger in a well-ventilated space. ...
10. Finally, if you are caring for a friend or family member who is running a fever, always wear a tight-fitting mask when you are near them, and place one on the ailing person (unless they are nauseated). When you replace an old, dirty mask from the face of your friend or loved one be very, very careful—assume, for the sake of your protection, that it is covered in viruses, and handle it while wearing latex gloves, place it inside of a disposable container, seal it, and then put it in the trash. While wearing those latex gloves, gently wash the patient’s face with warm soap and water, using a disposable paper towel or cotton swab, and seal it after use in a container or plastic bag before placing it in your household trash. Wear long-sleeved shirts and clothing that covers your body when you are caring for your ailing friend or relative. Clean everything your patient wears or touches very thoroughly in hot soapy water, including sheets, towels, and utensils. If you have space, isolate the sick person in your household in a room, or a corner of a room, where they are comfortable, but separated from the rest of the household. If the weather is tolerable, open a window that is on the opposite side of the room, so that air gently blows past the patient’s face and then outdoors. Of course, don’t do this if it is very cold, as your friend or loved one will be made sicker if uncomfortably cold.

Death toll in China 100 / 106 / 132/ 170
in Japan 7 / 11
Japan's health ministry officials have confirmed the first two cases of coronavirus infection without any symptoms in the country. They say the cases without signs of infection are the first to be made public outside of China.
The ministry confirmed that three evacuees from the Chinese city of Wuhan have the new type of coronavirus.
The three individuals were among 206 passengers who returned to Japan on Wednesday on a government-chartered flight.
A man in his 40s and a woman in her 50s do not have any signs of infection, but they have tested positive.
Death toll in China surpasses 170
The number of confirmed infections has topped 7,700.
Cases reported in 19 countries and territories.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
says the government will not hesitate to take necessary measures against the spread of the new coronavirus.
Speaking at a Diet committee on Thursday, Abe said the government places top priority on protecting people's health and lives.
He also said the government will closely monitor the impact on Japan's tourism industry and the wider economy, as Chinese group tours, which account for a large part of foreigners visiting Japan, are being canceled.
Abe referred to the case of two persons among those who arrived in Tokyo from Wuhan on a government-charted flight on Wednesday, and have refused to be tested for the new virus.
The prime minister said government officials tried hard to persuade them to take the test. But he said the test is not legally binding, and officials failed to get their consent. Abe added that it's difficult for the government to take further steps, partly due to issues of human rights.

WHO declares emergency over coronavirus outbreak
Coronavirus death toll tops 200 in China
Health officials in Hubei Province said 42 new deaths were confirmed on Thursday, bringing the death toll from the virus to 212.
They also said another 1,220 people have been infected with the virus in the worst-hit province alone.
The total number of infected people in China now stands at 8,931.
Japan confirms 3 more cases of new coronavirus
Japan has confirmed three more cases of infection with the new coronavirus, raising the total domestic tally to 14.
The latest confirmations came on Thursday. The three people include a Chinese student who is in her 20s and lives in the western prefecture of Kyoto, a male foreign national in his 50s, who lives in the western prefecture of Mie, and a tour conductor who is in her 30s and resides in the Chinese province of Hunan.
The health ministry says the Chinese student arrived in Japan on January 22 from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. It says she was rushed to a hospital on Tuesday after experiencing fevers.
The ministry says the foreign resident of Mie stayed in Wuhan from December 24. It says he returned to Japan on January 13, developed fevers on Tuesday, and was admitted to a hospital on Wednesday for signs of pneumonia.
The ministry says the tour conductor stayed in Wuhan on January 19 and came to Japan on the following day. It says she started developing fevers and coughing on January 24 and was admitted to hospital on Thursday.
The ministry says Japan is currently not at a stage where the virus is confirmed to be spreading. It is calling on people to take the same preventive measures they would normally use against infectious diseases, such as cold and flu.

Ministry may use private ferry to lodge evacuees
Japan's Defense Ministry is considering offering a ferry as temporary accommodation for evacuees from Wuhan, the Chinese city at the center of the coronavirus outbreak.
The evacuees have been transported from Wuhan aboard government-chartered flights. They are being housed at a hotel in Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, and elsewhere in the capital after being checked by medical professionals.
The ministry plans to offer evacuees the use of the 17,000-ton ferry Hakuou. The ministry has a contract to use the privately owned vessel to transport Self-Defense Force units.
The vessel was also used to allow survivors of a powerful quake that hit Hokkaido, northern Japan, in 2018 to take baths.
In the current case, the ferry may be docked at a port in or near Tokyo.

Coronavirus outbreak: Japan tackling emergency
A third chartered plane has repatriated 149 people from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, to Japan.
The evacuees were sent to medical institutions to be tested for the virus.
A total of 565 people have returned to Japan on government charters. Most will stay at a hotel and government facilities around Tokyo for up to two weeks, except those who have been hospitalized.
Officials say more than 100 others who are still in Wuhan have indicated they want to return to Japan.
They are making arrangements with the Chinese authorities to send a fourth flight next week.
The Defense Ministry is also considering offering evacuees temporary lodging on a ferry that's contracted to transport Self-Defense Force units.
It says the vessel could be docked at a port in the Tokyo area for the purpose.
So far, 15 cases of infection have been confirmed in Japan including 3 among those who were flown home.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says his government will promptly take measures to address the health emergency, noting that some people without symptoms have tested positive.
Abe said, " In accordance with immigration law, we will refuse entry to any non-nationals who are infected. We also need to step up immigration controls against anyone who could potentially be infected."
Researchers at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases say they have successfully isolated the coronavirus from a patient and have been able to culture it.
They say that will help them develop a vaccine, drug, or a new testing method.
Research institutes in China and Australia have already succeeded in isolating the virus.
A non-profit organization in western Japan has been sending masks and protective suits to medical workers in Wuhan. The group says it hopes the goods will help health workers in the city tackle the emergency.

Japan to expand scope of coronavirus tests
NHK has learned that the Japanese government plans to expand the scope of its tests for the coronavirus, after some people who had not met the criteria were confirmed to be infected.
The health ministry currently defines a suspected case of infection as someone who meets a set of criteria. The person must have a fever of 37.5 degrees Celsius or higher and symptoms of pneumonia. The individual must also have recently traveled to the Chinese city of Wuhan or had direct contact with someone from that city, who was exhibiting symptoms.
Such a case should be reported to authorities, and the person should be tested for the virus.
But some people in Japan have tested positive, even though they did not visit Wuhan or knowingly have direct contact with an infected person.
So, the health ministry has decided to change some of the criteria. Respiratory symptoms will replace pneumonia symptoms as one criterion.
Travel anywhere in Hubei Province or close contact with people who have visited the province will also be listed as criteria.
A governor can order people who test positive for the virus to be hospitalized or prevented from going to work for a certain period.
The health ministry plans to notify municipalities and medical institutions about the new criteria on Tuesday.
