白石島 遍路 Shiraishi Henro

Click on the right lower corner of the map for enlargement.

On July 2/3 we finally managed to do part of this enchanting pilgrimage, thanks to the kind and generous guidance of Amy and Paul !

Take a good pair of walking shoes and be prepared for some steep climbs. But it is all very much worth the effort ... a true Shikoku pilgrimage en miniature that you can enjoy at your leisure (and according to your degree of fitness) thanks to the guides who know this terrain so well from their daily walks.

We walked about 4 hours on the first afternoon and 3 more the next morning, covering a bit less than half of the temples, since I am a slow climber ... but what amazing vistas on the way !

I won't tell more at this point, you have to walk it yourself to see where it leads you.

Rocks and more Rocks on the way ...

The Fudo Iwa, Rock like Fudo at the Temple Kairyu-Ji

Benten Island, waiting for the Sunset

And not to miss the great finale of the Pilgrimage,
the Mooooo Bar right on the sunset beach !

Take a good rest before boarding the Ferry at shortly after 3 in the afternoon! That leaves plenty of time for the way home.

Spring Buds and Autumn Leaves: a Shiraishi Haibun
by John Dougill

Spring Buds and Autumn Leaves is an illustrated essay sprinkled with haiku poems that tells of the seasonal cycle on Shiraishi Island in Japan's Inland Sea. Written from the perspective of a visitor, it begins in spring with the joy of discovery before passing from the heat of summer to autumn colours and the darkening days of December.
