Weather officials say a "very strong" typhoon will likely make landfall on Tuesday between Shikoku and the Kii Peninsula in western Japan.
The Meteorological Agency says Jebi was 200 kilometers northeast of Minami Daito Island in the Pacific Ocean at noon on Monday. It was moving northwest at a speed of 20 kilometers an hour.
Jebi has a central atmospheric pressure of 940 hectopascals.
It would be the most powerful typhoon to make landfall in Japan this year.
The storm is packing winds of up to 160 kilometers per hour near its center. Jebi is expected to pick up speed while retaining its power before it lands on Tuesday.
Weather officials warn that winds will rapidly become "violent" in western and eastern Japan on Tuesday as Jebi approaches, and waves will be extremely high in these areas.
They say that damp air from around the typhoon will bring heavy rain to the Pacific coast of western Japan on Monday, especially in mountainous areas facing the sea.
On Tuesday, the rainfall is expected to intensify in eastern and western parts of the country.
Experts are advising people to make preparations and to check the locations of emergency shelters.

- NHK News 17:00-
Kansai International Airport in western Japan suspended operations at noon on Tuesday as Typhoon Jebi approached the area. The airport operator says high seas from the storm have inundated its facilities.
Kansai Airports says parking spaces and passages to the building basement have been flooded.
Camera footage shows a wide area of the airport submerged, including runways and parking space.
Mobile phone services have been disrupted at the airport.
The airport is built on a manmade island about 5 kilometers off the coast of Osaka Prefecture.
Japan Coast Guard officials at the airport say strong winds blew a tanker into a bridge that links the airport and Izumisano City.
They say the vessel was moored after carrying fuel to the airport. None of its 11 crew was injured.

Typhoon Jebi has made its second landfall in Japan, slamming in to the country's main island of Honshu. It hit the island of Shikoku a few hours earlier. It's one of the strongest typhoons to make landfall in Japan in 25 years.
Jebi is wreaking havoc on transportation links with evacuation advisories still in place across wide areas.
We're hearing reports that a few people in the country have been injured from the strong winds.
In western Japan, some people are taking shelter in centers like this amid a number of evacuation orders.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people remain under evacuation advisories in the city of Kobe and also in Osaka Prefecture. Officials say heavy rain could lead to landslides or flooding.
There are also large disruptions to transportation links.
Shinkansen bullet train service between Tokyo and Osaka is suspended.
There are other rail service suspensions as well in the Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe areas.
Airline companies have cancelled more than 750 domestic flights scheduled for Tuesday mainly in western Japan.
Weather officials say Jebi is now heading toward the country's north.
Japan's government has set up a task force to cope with Jebi. Prime Minister Abe is reminding people to be careful as the typhoon continues to tear through the country. Abe is asking people to take precausions to protect their lives by being ready to evacuate.
Officials are also warning people to stay vigilant in Tokyo.
Authorities say people there should be prepared for strong winds, flooding and landslides.

The storm disrupted transportation networks, heavily damaged the bridge that leads to Kansai International Airport and knocked out power to over a million homes.

- NHK NEWS -
Nine people are dead and more than 300 others are injured following powerful typhoon Jebi. It has stranded about 3,000 travelers at Kansai International Airport, one of the country's main travel hubs.
One runway was totally covered in water because of a storm surge. Transport ministry officials say several planes were submerged up to their engines. The airport was completely shut down Tuesday afternoon.
Powerful winds rammed a fuel tanker into the bridge linking the airport to the city of Izumisano in Osaka.
Eleven crew members were on board, but none were injured. All of them have been rescued.
The tanker crew could not start its engine, and officials are waiting for the weather to improve to tug the vessel.
An operation to free the stranded crew had to be called off because of a ruptured gas pipe along the bridge.
The crash cut off road and rail links to the airport.
Parts of the terminal buildings are without power, and cell phone connections are poor. Travelers lined up at a convenience store to stock up on food.
It is not yet clear when the airport will resume operations.

- NHK news at 12:00 -
An early morning earthquake has triggered landslides, caused widespread damage and left the whole of Japan's northern Hokkaido prefecture without power.
Strong aftershocks have followed and thousands of rescue crews are being mobilized.
Two people have died. At least 140 are injured and about 40 more are missing.

Enormous landslides - and all the homes below it are damaged !

- NHK -
An expert on erosion control says the strong earthquake that struck Hokkaido triggered multiple landslides in the town of Atsuma.
Hiroyuki Ohno says the powerful force generated by the quake caused the layers near the surface of a slope to collapse, triggering the simultaneous landslides.
He warns that the remaining portion of the slope could collapse if there are more tremors.
Ohno says the collapsed area is more prone to crumbling than usual, as rain will seep directly into the exposed soil.
He advises people in areas with landslide warnings and other hazardous locations to evacuate as quickly as possible.

Quake death toll reaches 35 in Hokkaido
