A storm moving over the Sea of Japan is bringing intermittent heavy rain to many parts of Japan.
The Meteorological Agency says tropical storm Prapiroon was 210 kilometers north of Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture in western Japan, as of 9 AM on Wednesday. It is moving northeast at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour. The storm has a central atmospheric pressure of 985 hectopascals and is packing winds of up to about 83 kilometers per hour.
The storm has brought torrential rain to the western main island of Shikoku through central Japan and also in Hokkaido, northern Japan.
Tokushima Prefecture in Shikoku is at high risk of being hit by landslides and some rivers in Yamaguchi Prefecture in western Japan could flood soon.
Weather officials forecast that the storm will become a low-pressure system by Wednesday night. They say it will likely approach northern Japan on Thursday afternoon.
They are warning that downpours may also hit areas far away from the storm.
They say heavy rain of more than 50 millimeters per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms, could hit the Pacific coast from western to eastern Japan through Thursday. Up to 30 millimeters per hour of rain is also forecast in northern Japan.
Rainfall of up to 300 millimeters is expected in some parts of Shikoku in the 24 hours through Thursday morning, up to 250 millimeters in the Kinki region in western Japan and the Tokai region in central Japan.

Weather officials are warning of record rainfall across a wide area of Japan in the coming days.
Chief Forecaster Ryuta Kurora at the Meteorological Agency's Forecast Department told reporters on Thursday that an active seasonal rain front is bringing heavy rain to eastern and western Japan. He said torrential and intermittent rain could continue until Sunday.
Kurora said northern Japan and the Okinawa region in southern Japan are also experiencing heavy rain. He added that very heavy rain will hit northern Japan Thursday evening and Okinawa on Saturday.
He cautioned against landslides, flooding and overflowing of rivers, as well as lightning strikes, tornados and strong gusts.
The agency says atmospheric conditions from western to northern Japan are very unstable due to the warm and moist air flowing into a low pressure system and an active front near northern Japan. The front will become more active, and also remain stationary near Japan's main island.
The agency is advising people to follow evacuation information from local governments and move to safe places before the situation gets worse.
It is advising people to stay away from swollen rivers, irrigation canals, cliffs and other potentially dangerous places. The agency is also cautioning against flooding in lower locations such as road underpasses or any sudden rises of water levels in narrow rivers.
