Art Place Japan - and Okayama

"Art Place Japan" - LA Times
In her 2006 installation "Linen," French artist Christian Boltanski flew hundreds of articles of white clothing over 2.5 acres of a riverbed. The effect was to conjure the ghosts of the landscape — the people who had left the struggling region.

Art Place Japan:
The Echigo-Tsumari Triennale and the Vision
to Reconnect Art and Nature

by Fram Kitagawa (Author), Lynne Breslin (Contributor), Adrian Favell (Contributor)

Every three years, three hundred square miles of land in northwestern Japan are transformed into the most ambitious and largest-scale art installation in the world: the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field. One hundred sixty of the world's best-known landscape artists, sculptors, and architects create artworks in two hundred villages that dot the mountains and terraced rice fields of the Japanese countryside, with the intent of rediscovering relationships between nature, art, and humanity, forging collaborations between global artists and local communities, and connecting people to each other and the land.

Bicchu Art Bridge Okayama
備中アートブリッジ 岡山

To conduct Artists in Residence in Kasaoka Islands,
Tamashima of the City of Kurashiki, and
Nariwa of the City of Takahashi to appeal the fascination of the areas.

The “Bicchu Art Bridge” is a project to invite artists from inside and outside Japan for Artists in Residence (AIR) to the three Bicchu areas, the western part of Okayama Prefecture, including Kasaoka Islands in the City of Kasaoka, Tamashima Area of the City of Kurashiki and Nariwa Area of Takahashi City. It is designed to connect local people and communities through art. Bicchu area lies along the basin of the Takahashi River which runs from Chugoku Mountains to Seto Inland Sea and its beautiful nature presents itself in diverse ways along the river. Since ancient times it produced iron and developed industries which in turn spawned rich cultures in different regions in this general area.
This year many artists will stay in these areas and create works through connecting and interacting with culture, nature, history and people of each respective area. The project will focus on what a local area can offer and creation takes place by leveraging what they learned from experiences in the specific local area. We can draw an analogy to textile for AIR. You twist different filaments together to make a yarn and consequently a textile. AIR explores latent values that are imbedded in a local area and weave the local beauty into new values.
Based on the history of these areas which thrived through cotton production and textile industry, creative works will incorporate cotton and textile as their ingredients. I hope this “Bicchu Art Bridge” will attract you to these areas that are full of charms and you feel in person the local natural and historical cultures.
