Super Typhoon Vongfong explodes,
becomes most intense storm on Earth in 2014
Super Typhoon Vongfong has rapidly intensified over the past 24 hours, from the equivalent of a category two hurricane to a monster typhoon with 155 mph wind speeds, and an estimated central pressure of 908 millibars.
... The Joint Typhoon Warning Center points to a favorable environment for the cause of the rapid intensification, including low wind shear and excellent outflow, which helps to ventilate and strengthen the storm.
... Forecast models are suggesting that the super typhoon could continue to intensify, tanking to 895 millibars — a typhoon intensity not seen since Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, which killed over 6,000 people. A pressure that low would beat this year’s second most intense storm — Typhoon Genevieve — by 20 millibars.
... Luckily, this monster storm is not expected to make landfall while it’s at such high intensity. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, Vongfong is forecast to make a sharp turn north toward Japan. By Saturday morning, the typhoon is forecast to weaken to the equivalent of a category three, and then a category two with wind speeds of 105 mph, as it approaches the southern islands of the Kagoshima Prefecture of Japan.

Typhoon Vongfong drenches southwest Japan

A "very strong" Typhoon Vongfong is moving over the main island of Japan's southwestern prefecture of Okinawa.
Elsewhere, record amounts of rain are falling in some parts of the country.
Japan's Meteorological Agency estimates that Vongfong is moving north at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. It has a central atmospheric pressure of 930 hectopascals and winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour near its center.
The agency says the heaviest rain in 5 decades is battering Hahajima Island in the Ogasawara chain, 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo.
Officials are calling on the public to take precautions against strong winds and high waves, as well as mudslides and flooding.

The typhoon is expected to veer east and bring heavy rain as it moves over a large part of Japan.
31 millimeters of rain fell in an hour on Sunday afternoon in Nobeoka, Miyazaki Prefecture.
Maximum rainfall by Monday evening is expected to reach 500 millimeters in Shikoku, 400 millimeters in southern Kyushu, and 300 millimeters in northern Kyushu, Kinki and Tokai.
The typhoon has left 40 people injured in southern Japan.

Typhoon makes landfall on Kyushu

A powerful typhoon has made landfall on Japan's southern main island of Kyushu. It has left one person missing and 52 others injured in Japan.
The Meteorological Agency says Typhoon Vongfong landed near Makurazaki in Kagoshima Prefecture at around 8:30 AM on Monday.
In Satsumasendai City, the storm dumped 85 millimeters of rain during a one-hour period in the morning.
The typhoon has forced the cancellation of about 440 domestic flights that were scheduled for Monday morning. The number is predicted to rise toward the evening.
Local authorities have issued evacuation orders or advisories to more than 460,000 people in 7 prefectures.

The agency says the storm moved out to the sea and then landed again near Sukumo City in Kochi Prefecture at around 2:30 PM.
Mitsubishi Motors suspends 4 plants
Mitsubishi Motors has decided to suspend operations at 4 of its factories in Japan to protect workers' safety, as a typhoon sweeps through the country.
The automaker has stopped operation at a plant in Kurashiki City in western Japan until early Tuesday. The factory mainly makes mini vehicles.
Mitsubishi says it will monitor the typhoon's movement and consider what to do with the plants on Tuesday.

Storm Vongfong kills one

Powerful storm Vongfong is racing across central Japan. Authorities say one person has been killed.
Weather officials have downgraded the system from typhoon to severe tropical storm. But they say it is still packing winds of up to 108 kilometers per hour as it moves northeast.
Police say a 90-year-old man was found in an irrigation channel in Tottori prefecture. He was later confirmed dead.
Local NHK reports suggest 2 people are missing and more than 90 others have been injured. The storm has destroyed or damaged over 50 homes. More than 170 houses have been flooded.
Local authorities issued evacuation orders or advisories to over 800,000 people at one point.
Airline operators have cancelled more than 60 domestic flights scheduled for Tuesday.
